Coronavirus cases top 16,000 in SC. Record number of cases reported Thursday

South Carolina reported 687 new cases of the coronavirus Thursday as the infectious disease continues to pound the state following Gov. Henry McMaster’s decision to ease restrictions in early May.

This number of new cases surpassed its previous high of 542, set just three days earlier according to Columbia’s WLTX-TV. South Carolina now has at least 16,441 confirmed COVID-19 cases, based on data from Johns Hopkins University.

The rate of positive tests had also jumped to 14.3% on Wednesday. That ratio is relatively high and shows that South Carolina is not testing enough people.
